By contrast, downloads in April 2020 were up 21% YoY from April 2019, which kicked off investor interest in the category.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From June 2020 to May 2021, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8080096342\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Calm<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8080508720\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Headspace<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8108403443\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Noom <\/a>and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8180810516\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Talkspace<\/a>&nbsp;raised $963M in private equity and venture funding. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8181324713\/about\" target=\"_blank\">BetterHelp<\/a>, which we also included in this market, has been privately held by Teladoc since 2016. After the 2021 New Year\u2019s seasonal spike, however, user acquisition and engagement steadily declined for the group. To date, downloads are down 33% and monthly active users (MAUs) are down 23% for the group of top mental health apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large apptopia__blog--img\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"740\" src=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png-1024x740.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandbox-wp.apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png-1024x740.webp 1024w, https:\/\/sandbox-wp.apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png-300x217.webp 300w, https:\/\/sandbox-wp.apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png-768x555.webp 768w, https:\/\/sandbox-wp.apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png-1536x1110.webp 1536w, https:\/\/sandbox-wp.apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Untitled-design-5-png.webp 1592w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The mobile performance trend lines for the market resemble that of <a href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/unified\/app\/8080332037\/about\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peloton<\/a>: after an uplift in downloads and engagement over 2020, it had its last hurrah in January 2021 before declining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More money, more problems?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Curiously, BetterHelp is bucking the trend and has been growing on an upward trajectory since January 2020. Last month\u2019s download totals for Headspace and Noom were at their lowest since 2016 and 2018, respectively. The low demand has not gone unnoticed by Noom, who <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/weight-loss-app-noom-laying-off-coaching-staff-2022-4\" target=\"_blank\">laid off hundreds of coaches<\/a> in the past couple weeks.
